Can a woman really have it all? After university, Catherine and Gwen chose opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in opposite ways, each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs.

Roles (4f, 1m) in order of appearance:

Gwen Harper - Female, early 40s, any ethnicity. Married to Don. Gwen has adopted a can-do, bright and positive cheerleader personality to stave off darkness, fear, and the wish to drink (she’s been sober for 15 years). A pretty and winning stay-at-home mom to two children, with reserves of anger and frustration she struggles to suppress.

Catherine Croll - Female, early 40s, any ethnicity. Feminist author and professor, recently back living with her mother who suffered a heart attack. An attractive and highly successful academic confronting with old desires and new regrets. Ever poised and competent, a new vulnerability is peeking through. Smart, and subtly sexy. A steady, successful overachiever finding herself unmoored at midlife by the prospects of love and loss.

Don Harper - Male, early 40s, any ethnicity. Married to Gwen. Dean at a liberal arts college in New England. A smart and sexy underachiever. Once a brilliant and charismatic grad student; now married with two kids. His good looks have faded a bit; he drinks too much, smokes too much pot, and has his share of regret. Don is a golden boy who just didn’t work hard enough. At 40, he’s cultivated a languid, mellow, “it’s all good” personality to mask frustration and disappointment.

Avery Willard - Female, 21, any ethnicity. College student. Gwen and Don’s babysitter. Ambitious, opinionated, provocative college student. Enrolls in Catherine's class on feminism and media. A very smart, sassy, tells it like it is, truly “liberated” young woman, though surprisingly naive in some respects. Often the voice of reason and has the clearest insight amidst the three mature adults going through their mid-life crises.

Alice Croll - Female, 70s, any ethnicity.  Mother to Catherine. Recently had a heart attack, but is up on her feet. Sweet and gentle, Alice was a stay-at-home mother devoted to her daughter almost to the point of obsession. A dedicated homemaker, now a widow facing her mortality, she is asking questions, examining her past for the first time, and finding her discoveries exhilarating.
